Nablus, West Bank

January 28th, 2023, Saturday evening, Society of Saint Yves field officer was attacked by Israeli settlers. He was attacked while providing first aid services to injured Palestinian civilians. Although he wore his health worker uniform, this did not stop Israeli settlers from attacking him and the ambulance.

It is important to note that over the weekend Israeli settler ‘revenge’ attacks against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have escalated, amounting to at least 144 Israeli settlers attack reported on Saturday. Settlers attacked Palestinian civilians, cars, homes, trees, greenhouses.

International humanitarian law prohibits attacks on healthcare workers and facilities and requires that they be protected to carry out their life-saving work. Society of Saint Yves call on the international community, to demand that Israel cease attacks on humanitarian workers and routine use of excessive force against Palestinians.

We also call on states to strengthen the protection of medical personnel and facilities in the occupied Palestinian territory by promoting adherence to UN Security Resolution 2286 (2016). Now more than ever we must take the opportunity to speak out against Israeli settlers’ attacks on Palestinian civilians, humanitarian actors including health workers, and demand and end to impunity for violations of international law that keep them in the firing line.
